The gallery shows art from the City of London’s collection, including Pre-Raphaelite paintings and a huge battle scene by John Singleton Copley. In the basement you can see the walls of the Roman amphitheatre, which was only discovered at the end of the 20th century. In the square in front of the Guildhall, a dark line in the paving marks the outline of the arena. The Guildhall itself, with its great medieval hall, can sometimes be visited.

Background

The Guildhall Art Gallery houses the art collection of the City of London, England. The museum is located in the Moorgate area of the City of London. It is a stone building in a semi-Gothic style intended to be sympathetic to the historic Guildhall, which is adjacent and to which it is connected internally.
