Waterloo Bridge

From the middle of the bridge: Westminster and the London Eye to the west, the City to the east.

20 minfree

No other bridge shows you so much of London at once: Parliament, the London Eye, St Paul’s and the towers of the City. The bridge was largely built by women during the Second World War and is therefore also known as the ‘Ladies’ Bridge’. The Southbank Centre lies at the southern end, and beneath the bridge the book market sells second-hand books. The view is most atmospheric in the evening, when the lights come on along the river.

Background

Waterloo Bridge () is a road and foot traffic bridge crossing the River Thames in London, between Blackfriars Bridge and Hungerford Bridge and Golden Jubilee Bridges. Its name commemorates the victory of the British, Dutch and Prussians at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Thanks to its location at a strategic bend in the river, the bridge offers good views of Westminster, the South Bank and the London Eye to the west, and of the City of London and Canary Wharf to the east. The bridge was given Grade II* listed structure protection in 1981.
